Current Projects

In addition to our continuing involvement with legal education through the Pre-Law Summer Institute, and with tribal judicial systems through the Southwest Intertribal Court of Appeals, the AILC is involved in a number of ongoing projects, the larger of which are described here.

Violence Against Indian Women

The Department of Justice, Violence Against Women Office, has funded the AILC to undertake several tasks involving full faith and credit issues in accordance with the Violence Against Women Act of 1994. These projects include developing products such as bench cards for tribal courts on VAWA, and conducting regional and national meetings to educate court, law enforcement, and social work personnel on the full faith and credit aspects of VAWA which affect their offices and staff.

Model Tribal Adoption Code

The AILC is working with the National Indian Child Welfare Association (NICWA) and the Casey Foundation on a project to develop a Model Adoption Code that emphasizes traditional forms of adoption.
