UNM Law in Brief
Location
The School of Law is the state’s only law school and is located on the University of New Mexico’s North Campus, adjacent to a 9-hole golf course and across the street from the university’s medical school complex. It is in Albuquerque, the state’s largest city, which sits at an altitude of 5,000 feet between the Rio Grande and the Sandia Mountains.
Size
About 350 students attend the school, with approximately 115 enrolled in the first-year class. By design, the school has remained this size in order to provide students more hands-on learning and individual attention from professors. First-year course sizes range from 13 students in the practicum course to 23 in LRRW to 58 students in Comparative History and Legal Perspectives.
Academic Character
Accessibility and informality are important tenets to the educational experience. Students are challenged academically and receive a well-rounded legal education with an emphasis on practical application of the law.
Degrees Awarded
J.D., J.D./Master of Public Administration, J.D./M.B.A., J.D./M.A. in Latin American Studies and J.D./M.A. in Water Resources. Students may seek other dual programs with permission of the Graduate School and the law school.
J.D. Tuition (2007-2008)
$10,561 resident; $24,467 nonresident. Nonresidents may qualify for resident tuition rates after the first year.
Areas of Emphasis
The School's clinical program, a requirement for graduation, is recognized nationally as one of the best, offering students a broad range of practical opportunities. Students can earn certificates in Indian Law and Natural Resources Law. Study abroad opportunities are available with special UNM exchange programs in Mexico, Canada, and Tasmania.
Faculty
The 34 full-time faculty members received their J.D.'s from 19 law schools around the country. Fifty percent are women, and 35 percent are minorities.
Admissions
Rolling admissions. First-year application deadline is February 15. Transfer and visiting applications are due June 15.
