Crimmigration

Students will learn about how an indigent criminal defendant becomes a public defender client, how their file makes its way to their assigned Public Defender, case timelines and trajectories, resolution options, and special considerations for non-citizen clients.   Also discussed will be the meaning of these seminal cases, their impact on non-citizens and criminal defense lawyers, and a discussion on the reasonableness of such a standard, obstacles to defense attorneys meeting the mandate, and consequences of not doing so, both for clients and their lawyers.  Additionally students will learn about resolution options available to clients and their attorneys, Metro court specifics, and specifically applicable immigration and criminal case law on DWIs. Students will learn about plea options, immigration ramifications, and common obstacles to resolving DV cases both in Metro and District Court.
