    Lawyers who are actively involved in asserting and defending clients' rights through litigation, in fact, spend very little of their time in trial, or even in the courtroom. This course will focus on lawyers' work before trial in both State and Federal court. Topics covered include case strategy, investigation, drafting pleadings, discovery practice, motion practice, the pretrial conference, and negotiation and settlement. Teaching methods will include discussions, readings, demonstrations, a court "field trip", and drafting exercises.
