Open House

The University of New Mexico School of Law hosts several Open House Sessions during the 2010 application process. This is an excellent opportunity for prospective applicants to connect with UNM Law students, faculty, staff, and alumni, and learn more about the Law School program, including the application process and financial aid options.

Open House dates are: Friday, September 18; Friday, October 23; Friday, November 6; Friday, January 22.

The following are the workshops and programs that will be offered during the course of an Open House. Please review the list. Based on your needs, and where you are in the application process, you select the program(s) to attend.

Open House Workshops and Events to Choose From

Attend First-Year Torts Class: 8:30 am – 9:20 am

Have you been involved in a fender-bender? Tripped on a cracked sidewalk? Been bitten by a neighbor’s dog? Had something stolen? If so, you could possibly have been in the realm of torts (“wrongful acts”). Attend a torts lecture and listen in on how human activity, whether intentional or not, can lead to some very interesting legal questions and issues. Whatever area of tort law is covered during the lecture, you will get to experience first-hand what a first year law student sees and hears in class, and perhaps even get a taste of what the Socratic method of teaching is all about. This is also a good opportunity to meet and talk with current students or the professor.

Law School Tour: 9:30 am – 10:20 am

Law students will offer tours of the UNM School of Law campus.

Workshop: Introduction to the Application Process 10:30 am – 11:25 am

The session will cover the application process for admission to UNM School of Law. It will detail deadline dates and all required materials, as well as provide suggestions on submitting your personal best application.

Lunch with the UNM Law Community 11:30 am – 1:00 pm

Opportunity to meet and talk with fellow prospective applicants, law school students and faculty, alumni, and other UNM Law community members in an informal and relaxed setting.

Panel: Life After Law School – Now What? 1:15 pm – 2:15 pm

A diverse panel of UNM Law alumni and community members will share their professional experiences; from life after law school, professional development and growth, and employment opportunities. There will also be time allotted for participants to ask questions to the panel.

Panel: Curriculum 2:20 pm – 3:10 pm

Hear faculty and students speak, as well as be able to ask your specific questions, about UNM Law’s academic curriculum; including the Natural Resources and Environmental Law Certificate Program, the Indian Law Certificate Program, and the Clinical Law Programs.

Workshop: Financing Law School 3:15 pm – 4:00 pm

This introductory workshop will discuss the requirements, processes, and deadlines for applying for financial aid for the 2010-11 academic year. It will also provide an overview of the different types of financial aid opportunities from federal, institutional, and private sources.

Student Panel: 4:05 pm – 5:00 pm

After attending morning and afternoon programming, you have the chance to informally meet and talk with law school students on any of the topics covered in the day’s events and any questions you have for the group.
