On March 22, 2011, the enthusiastic UNM School of Law DC alumni group gathered for an informal happy hour at the Elephant and Castle Pub in Washington, D.C. The happy hour provided UNM law students Anne Illanes-Meyers (`12) and Monica Moya (`12), who are visiting this semester at Howard University School of Law and Columbus School of Law at the Catholic University of America, respectively, an opportunity to meet graduates of the UNM School of Law who live and work in the nation's capital. (Moses Winston (`12) is also visiting at Catholic this semester but was unable to attend.)
UNM law school alumni and students chatted over beers and nachos while waxing nostalgic about UNM and trading stories about working inside the Beltway. Also in attendance were Kathryn Benz (`06), Jane Cavanaugh (`95), Rebecca Roose (`04), Chandria Slaughter (`02), Patrick Schaefer (`09), Denise Coca (`96), Michael Connelly (`93), honorary alumna Ana Montiel, and the organizers of the event, Anne Noel Occhialino (`98) and Tequila Brooks (`97). Sadly, there was no green chile at this event, but the group hopes to work that into their next event, which will be a reception with Dean Washburn to be held in late June in Washington, DC.
The UNM School of Law DC alumni group kicked off in 2009 with a professionalism CLE course fundraiser and the establishment of a fellowship fund to help UNM law students take low-paid and unpaid internships in Washington, D.C.
