After graduating from the UNM School of Law in 1982, Wendy York worked at the Santa Fe Public Defender’s Office and then entered private practice, focusing on criminal and civil litigation. She also taught torts, criminal law and criminal procedure.
In 1997, the governor appointed her to the district court and she was elected in 1998. She was viewed as a judge who worked tirelessly to know the case and parties before her. While on the bench she received the Outstanding Judge of the Year from the Albuquerque Bar Association and the Power and Caring Award from the Women’s Bar Association.
Since 2005, she has worked as a mediator and arbitrator with the Sheehan & Sheehan law firm. Since that time, she has mediated approximately 1,500 cases. She has been named a Super Lawyer in the area of Alternative Dispute Resolution.
York is a constant presence in the pursuit of training lawyers in trial advocacy and is a passionate community activist. In 2006, she received the Distinguished Alumnus award from the UNM Department of Economics. She has served as the chair of the UJI Civil Committee and the City of Albuquerque Charter Task Force.
In 2011, she helped spearhead a very successful holiday food drive, which she hopes to make an annual tradition. She and her husband of 25 years, Stephen McCue, believe that their biggest accomplishment is their son, Alex.
