This online course has been approved by the NMMCLE Board for 1 professionalism CLE credit.
This program focuses on the role of professionalism in Washington, D.C., where many federal government attorneys practice along with their colleagues who deal with the U.S. government on many levels. These attorneys need to think “institutionally,” which requires them to ponder the longer-term values of the governmental processes in which they participate.
Over the past several decades institutional misconduct has been the subject of innumerable media frenzies. They include the Savings and Loan scandal, the Junk Bond Scandal, the BCCI Money Laundering scandal, the Mutual Funds scandal, and the more recent Wall Street debacle. All of these cases resulted from institutional failures and have engendered distrust in our governmental institutions. On a more practical level they are the result of individuals failing to live up to the general public’s expectations of people in positions of responsibility, particularly those in government. The basic moral principles of honesty, integrity and fairness must be part of each attorney’s daily practice in order for governmental institutions to regain the trust of the American public. This program will examine how attorneys can assist in restoring that trust through their daily activities.
