Clinical Law Programs
About the Clinic
What the Clinic Offers
The UNM School of Law Clinical Law Programs is a national leader in clinical education. The law school provides all Law School students the opportunity to participate in a variety of clinical programs and externships. These programs provide students with a broad range of experimental learning opportunities as both licensed student attorneys (clinics) and closely supervised law clerks (externships). There are also opportunities for students to work on cases in small teams.
Under the supervision of faculty, students provide the full range of representation to individual clients in the Law Practice, Indian Law, and Community Lawyering Clinics. As student attorneys, students have the opportunity to improve interviewing and counseling skills, plan case strategy, and appear in court. This gives students unparalleled experience practicing law and handling client cases.
All Clinic students are trained to provide community education, legal advice and representation to individual and group clients. To prepare for their work, all Clinic students complete classes covering skills, ethical issues, and substantive law and policy. Students receive one-on-one supervision of their casework from supervising attorneys.
