Clinical Law Programs
About the Clinic
Who the Clinic Serves
Through the UNM Law Clinic Program, law students provide legal services (pending acceptance) to low income individuals in the Albuquerque area. Our staff determines eligibility for clinic services. Potential clients are screened for geographical and financial eligibility. Similar questions determining eligibility may also be asked during the initial intake interview, which costs $10. Usually, if prospective clients meet Clinic guidelines and have the type of case the Clinic can handle, then the Clinic faculty will accept the case.
Once the client/case has been accepted for representation, the client must pay a $50 case acceptance fee. All clients are personally responsible for all costs of litigation, including but not limited to filing and service fees, discovery costs, and attorney fees awarded to the opposing party as a result of litigation. The Clinic does not advance costs of litigation on behalf of clients.
Community outreach is important to the law Clinic. The student attorney serves those in the UNM community (students and employees of the university) as well as those affiliated with native tribes. Students participating in the Children’s Advocacy clinic hold intake interviews and provide legal services in community programs such as the UNM School of Medicine’s Milagro Program, SELECTT (Starting Early to Link Enhanced Comprehensive Treatment Team), GRO and Los Pasos.
