Clinical Law Programs
Our Clients
Fees, Costs and Case Progress
Fees
Clients, including clients previously represented by the clinic and clients seeking to re-open a case, are charged an administrative fee to help defray Clinic expenses. All fees are payable in advance to the UNM Clinical Law Programs. This fee may be waived upon approval of the Director.
- Initial Interview Fee: $10.00
- Case Acceptance Fee: $50.00
Costs
Clients are responsible for all case costs. These are costs not paid to the Clinic. Costs may include, but are not limited to:
- Court filing fees
- Court or administrative copying, filing or recording fees
- Extraordinary postal, photo services
- Extraordinary telephone costs
- Service of process costs
- Publication fees
- Investigatory fees
- Extraordinary travel fees
The Clinic offers a Trust Account if the client does not have a checking account or if the court does not accept personal checks. The client can bring in cash, check or money order to be held in their Trust Account until a Law Clinic Trust Account check is typed for that cost.
If you have any questions about Clinic services, fees or costs, please discuss them with the law student assigned to your case. If you still have questions, please feel free to talk with the student’s supervisor or the Clinic Director.
Case Progress
Clients considering using our services are advised the legal work performed may be slower than that by a private attorney. This is because services are provided by law students who leave at the end of the semester and are replaced with another law student. Also, the need for students to have their work reviewed by a professor may cause some delay.
