Southwest Indian Law Clinic
As a law student at Stanford, I took the now defunct Community Law Practice Clinic. It was a life-changing experience and easily the most important in my legal education. In Clinic, I learned that the problems of poor people are every bit as complicated and legally difficult as those of people and corporations able to spend thousands of dollars for legal representation. I learned that poor people have knowledge and understanding of their reality that surpasses what I will ever have, but that I can put my skills to work on their behalf and together we can move toward achieving their goals. Just as importantly, I learned that working on behalf of poor communities requires understanding complex social, political, economic, and cultural contexts and being able to use myriad tools – litigation, policy analysis and advocacy, education, community organizing – within those contexts. As a clinical teacher, I’m beginning to understand the power of clinical education and the tremendous learning that comes when students work with real people to solve real problems.
