Clinical Law Programs

Southwest Indian Law Clinic

The Southwest Indian Law Clinic (SILC) provides students the opportunity to represent clients in cases involving Native American issues in various state, federal, and tribal courts and in governmental agencies. Students are also given the opportunity to work with selected tribes, pueblos, and community groups on broader legal issues and community education. Students enrolled in the SILC are closely supervised in their work by a specialist in Indian Law. SILC emphasizes community involvement and sensitivity, collaborative lawyering, and a multi-disciplinary approach to problem solving. A course in Indian Law is a prerequisite to the SILC.

Students select the project they will work on during their clinical experience, including for example, land claims, taxation, tribal court development, environment and native prisoners’ rights.
