The UNM School of Law's 10:1 student-faculty ratio reflects a commitment to providing a learning environment with opportunities for in-depth study of a broad variety of subject areas.
During the first year, students follow a set curriculum designed to provide the building blocks essential for a successful legal career. Along with traditional doctrinal courses, students begin to learn practical skills, along with broader concepts about what it means to be a lawyer. Beginning in 2008, a Flexible Time Program was established for students unable to commit to a full-time course load.
After the first year, most courses are electives, taught in small-class settings. Students can pursue a traditional legal education or immerse themselves in areas unique to the Southwest or new areas of the law. Every student will complete a semester in the law school's clinic.
Most students take three years to complete the degree.
