• Legal Reasoning, Research, and Writing (LRRW)

  • Course Description

LRRW is the foundational legal analysis and communication course. In LRRW students learn how to use legal reasoning to predict the outcome of a legal problem. As part of the legal problem solving process students learn how to do legal research, both in the law library and on line. Having collected relevant information, students learn how to connect that information to new facts as they analyze a legal problem in preparation for writing an advisory memo. They then learn how to organize that analysis and effectively present it to a reader. The focus is on writing as a process consisting of prewriting (research, analysis and organization), writing a first draft, and rewriting, revising and editing. Each step of the process is a foundation for the next step and therefore must be competently completed. Assignments include several short research assignments and short in class and out of class writing exercises. Students then complete the entire problem solving and communication process in the context of writing three different legal memoranda, two with closed research and one that includes open research as part of the assignment. In addition, students write client letters and are introduced to legal drafting.
