Business and Tax Law

About the Program

The mission of the Business Law curriculum is to train business lawyers, particularly transactional lawyers, to serve entrepreneurs, businesses, communities and tribes around New Mexico and the United States. The law school's small size, small classes and low student-faculty ratio make it possible to achieve this goal, along with a business law faculty that brings many years of experience in the real world to the classroom. In other words, they know what students need to know to become successful business lawyers.

An Intimate, Hands On Approach

At UNM, we know that sitting in big lecture halls does not turn students into business lawyers. Through our creative, hands-on business law curriculum, we train students to do what real lawyers do, things like drafting contracts, negotiating deals, problem solving to meet the business objectives of clients and working in interdisciplinary teams with experts in finance, accounting and other fields. We believe that substantive black-letter law and theoretical approaches to learning are not mutually exclusive, but rather reinforce one another. Both are critical components of training the complete business lawyer.

Classes are small, which means students receive plenty of individual attention. Most Business Law classes have less than 25 students, and in the Business and Tax Clinic students work in groups of eight with their professor.

Please contact any of the core business faculty for more information or to arrange a tour of the law school.
