The Donors intend that the Award be used to assist in maintaining the highest quality faculty at the University of New Mexico School of Law. The purpose of the fund is to support and encourage excellence in teaching and scholarship among the law school faculty. Awarded annually for a faculty member's contribution to the growth and reputation of the Law School either by teaching, scholarly research or other meritorious achievement.

To be awarded to support instruction and research in the area of Consumer & Clinical law within the School of Law based on the following criteria: to a professor, or visiting professor, or new professor who demonstrates excellence in, and commitment to, Consumer Law, Clinical Law and/or Consumer Advocacy. Appointments to the chair shall be made for a period of five (5) years, a term which may be amended or renewed by the Dean. Donors intend that the Chair be used to foster excellence in instruction and research. The Chair may be used to recruit or retain a new, existing or visiting professor or faculty member when making this faculty appointment. If the purpose is to attract and retain a distinguished professor with a demonstrated interest in (the area) a commitment to participation in the Clinical Legal Education program may be included.

Leon Karelitz Chair in Oil & Gas Law

Awarded to a current or visiting professor of Oil & Gas Law with prior experince in the actual practice of Oil & Gas Law; selected by the Dean. An Advanced Oil & Gas Law course will be taught by the Endowed Chair professor at least one semester every 3 years. In addition, or as an alternative, to a visiting professor, the School of Law, through the dean or his designate, is authorized 1) to hire a full-time professor for a period of up to 5 years, which shall be renewable for successful demonstrated performance in teaching and/or scholarship in the field of O&G law, or 2) to hire an adjunct from the practicing O&G bar to teach O&G or an Advanced O&G course, 3) or both, and 4) resources permitting, to fund the development by such professor(s) of the O&G law curriculum.

Pamela B. Minzner Chair in Professionalism

Awarded to an accomplished law school professor who has demonstrated in action, teaching and charcter the attributes of professionalism, as required by the legal practice and the practice of legal education, and whose conduct and performance is reminiscent of the caliber of commitment and professionalism demonstated in the life and work of Justice Pamela B. Minzner. Awarded each term by the Dean, in consultation with Richard Minzner or his designee.

The awardee should demonstrate qualities in line with how Professor Weihofen’s heart was truly in the School of Law; the faculty, students and the institution as a whole and how he took great pride in watching it grow in size and excellence. The Donors intend that the fund be used for a Chair, Chairs or one or multiple Profesorships, at the discretion of the Dean. To be used to assist the University of New Mexico School of Law to further its national reputation and to strengthen its academic program by recruiting and retaining distinguished teachers and scholars. May be used to invite visiting professors to teach at the School of Law on a part-time or full-time basis, or award a Henry Weihofen Chair or Professorship to one or more current faculty members; and/or award a Henry Weihofen Chair or Professorship to a new full-time faculty member.

UNM Regents Professors receive a three-year appointment that includes a stipend used to further their research or professional projects, funded by the UNM Board of Regents. The title is one of the highest honors UNM bestows on faculty, and the title may be used for life.

Criteria for selection as a Regents Lecturer are established at the college level, with nominations forwarded by the Dean to the Provost for a term of appointment of three years. Funded by the UNM Board of Regents, the lectureship was established by the regents in the 1980s. UNM Regents Lectures receive a three-year lectureship that includes a stipend used to further their research or professional projects, funded by the UNM Board of Regents. Title may be used for life.
