When Peter Winograd joined the UNM law faculty as associate dean in 1976, he already was part of a national network of legal administrators dedicated to maintaining and improving the standards of legal education.
Through involvement in a broad range of national associations, including the Law School Admission Council, the Association of American Law Schools, the American Law Institute and, most extensively, the American Bar Association's Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar, he has continued to play an influential role in the development of legal education.
As part of his ABA work he has helped evaluate more than 30 law schools across the country, often discovering programs and approaches that he has taken back to the UNM law school. He also served as vice chair of the ABA's Task Force on Law Schools and the Profession, which issued a report that received attention from legal educators as well as members of the bench and bar.
Winograd had been assistant dean and director of admissions at New York University School of Law, associate dean and director of admissions at Georgetown University Law Center and a division director at the Educational Testing Service before joining the UNM law faculty.
At UNM, he handled general administration matters. Winograd helped develop orientation programs for incoming and transfer students, along with a mentor program. He also has served on the State Bar of New Mexico's Task Force on Minorities in the Profession.
