Judicial Vacancies

The Constitution of New Mexico mandates conduction of Judicial selection by the Judicial Nominating Commission, a board comprised of New Mexico Judges, attorneys and citizens, chaired by the Dean of the UNM School of Law.

The Commission solicits applications, interviews and recommends candidates to the Governor of New Mexico for each judicial vacancy on either of the state appellate courts, any of the 13 state district courts, and the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court.

Magistrate court vacancies are not subject to this process. Information about current magistrate court vacancies, and application procedures, can be found on the Governor’s website.

8th Judicial District Court Judicial Nominees

The District Court Judicial Nominating Commission convened Monday, June 22, 2015 in Raton, New Mexico, and completed its evaluation of three (3) applicants for the pending vacancy on the 8th Judicial District Court. The Commission recommends the following two (2) applicants (in alphabetical order) to Governor Susana Martinez:

9th Judicial District Court Nominees

The 9th Judicial District Court Judicial Nominating Committee convened on Tuesday, June 16, 2015, in Clovis, New Mexico, and completed its evaluation of the six (6) applicants for the vacancy on the 9th Judicial District Court. The Committee recommends that all six (6) applicants (in alphabetical order) to Governor Susana Martinez:

Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court Announcement of Vacancy

One (1) vacancy on the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court will exist as of August 1, 2015, due to the retirement of the Honorable Kevin L. Fitzwater. The vacancy will be a Criminal Court bench assignment, Division II. Inquiries regarding more specific details or the assignment of this judicial vacancy should be directed to the Chief Judge or the Administrator of the court.

The Dean of the UNM School of Law, designated by the New Mexico Constitution to Chair the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court Nominating Committee, solicits applications for this position from lawyers who meet the statutory qualifications in Section 34, Article 8A-4b of the New Mexico Statutes Annotated 1978.

Applications as well as information related to qualifications for the position, may be obtained from the Judicial Selection website: http://lawschool.unm.edu/judsel/application.php. The deadline for applications has been set for Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at 5:00 p.m. Applications received after that date will not be considered.

Applicants seeking information regarding election or retention if appointed should contact the Bureau of Elections in the Office of the Secretary of State.

The Judicial Nominating Committee will meet on Tuesday, July 21, 2015, at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Courthouse, 401 Lomas NW, Room 849, Albuquerque, NM, to evaluate the applicants for this position. The Committee meeting is open to the public and members of the public who wish to be heard about any of the candidates will have an opportunity to be heard.

12th Judicial District Court Nominees
