Judicial Vacancies

The Constitution of New Mexico mandates conduction of Judicial selection by the Judicial Nominating Commission, a board comprised of New Mexico Judges, attorneys and citizens, chaired by the Dean of the UNM School of Law.

The Commission solicits applications, interviews and recommends candidates to the Governor of New Mexico for each judicial vacancy on either of the state appellate courts, any of the 13 state district courts, and the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court.

Magistrate court vacancies are not subject to this process. Information about current magistrate court vacancies, and application procedures, can be found on the Governor’s website.

New Mexico Seventh Judicial Court Nominees

The Seventh Judicial District Court Nominating Commission convened on May 18, 2017 in Socorro, New Mexico, and completed its evaluation of the six (6) applicants for the vacancy on the Seventh Judicial District Court.

The Commission recommends the following five (5) applicants (in alphabetical order) to Governor Susana Martinez:

Six (6) applications have been received in the Judicial Selection Office as of 5:00 p.m., Thursday, May 11, 2017, for the Judicial Vacancy in the Seventh Judicial District Court due to the retirement of Honorable Judge Kevin Sweazea effective May 3, 2017.

The Seventh Judicial District Judicial Nominating Commission will meet on Thursday, May 18, 2017, at the Seventh Judicial District Court, Socorro County Courthouse, 200 Church Street Socorro, NM 87801 to evaluate the applicants for this position.

The Commission meeting is open to the public. Those wishing to make public comment are requested to be present at the opening of the meeting.

The Sixth Judicial District Court Nominating Commission convened on April 27, 2017 in Silver City, New Mexico, and completed its evaluation of the four (4) applicants for the vacancy on the Sixth Judicial District Court.

New Mexico Seventh Judicial District Court Announcement of Vacancy

A vacancy on the Seventh Judicial District Court will exist as of May 4, 2017 due to the retirement of Honorable Judge Kevin Sweazea, effective May 3, 2017. Inquiries regarding the details or assignment of this judicial vacancy should be directed to the Administrator of the Court.

Alfred Mathewson, Chair of the Seventh Judicial District Court Judicial Nominating Commission, invites applications for this position from lawyers who meet the statutory qualifications in Article VI, Section 28 of the New Mexico Constitution. Applications may be obtained from the Judicial Selection website: http://lawschool.unm.edu/judsel/application.php, or emailed to you by contacting the Judicial Selection Office at (505.277.4700). The deadline for applications has been set for Thursday, May 11, 2017 at 5:00. Applications received after that time will not be considered.

Applicants seeking information regarding election or retention if appointed should contact the Bureau of Elections in the Office of the Secretary of State.

The Seventh Judicial District Court Judicial Nominating Commission will meet beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 18, 2017, to interview applicants for the position in Socorro, New Mexico. The Commission meeting is open to the public and anyone who wishes to be heard about any of the candidates will have an opportunity to be heard.
