Judicial Vacancies

The Constitution of New Mexico mandates conduction of Judicial selection by the Judicial Nominating Commission, a board comprised of New Mexico Judges, attorneys and citizens, chaired by the Dean of the UNM School of Law.

The Commission solicits applications, interviews and recommends candidates to the Governor of New Mexico for each judicial vacancy on either of the state appellate courts, any of the 13 state district courts, and the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court.

Magistrate court vacancies are not subject to this process. Information about current magistrate court vacancies, and application procedures, can be found on the Governor’s website.

A vacancy on the Third Judicial District Court will exist as of February 1, 2017 due to the resignation of The Honorable Darren M. Kugler effective January 31, 2017. Inquiries regarding the details or assignment of this judicial vacancy should be directed to the Administrator of the Court.

Alfred Mathewson, Chair of the Third Judicial District Court Judicial Nominating Commission, invites applications for this position from lawyers who meet the statutory qualifications in Article VI, Section 28 of the New Mexico Constitution. Applications may be obtained from the Judicial Selection website: http://lawschool.unm.edu/judsel/application.php, or emailed to you by contacting the Judicial Selection Office at (505) 277-4700). The deadline for applications has been set for Thursday, February 16, 2017 at 5:00. Applications received after that time will not be considered.

Applicants seeking information regarding election or retention if appointed should contact the Bureau of Elections in the Office of the Secretary of State.

The Third Judicial District Court Judicial Nominating Commission will meet beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 23, 2017, to interview applicants for the position at the Las Cruces, New Mexico. The Commission meeting is open to the public and anyone who wishes to be heard about any of the candidates will have an opportunity to be heard.

Judicial Notice of Retirement

Sixth Judicial District, Division 1

The Sixth Judicial District Court announces the retirement of the Honorable H.R. Quintero effective March 24, 2017. A Judicial Nominating Commission will be convened in Silver City, New Mexico in April, 2017 to interview applicants for these vacancies.

Seven (7) applications have been received in the Judicial Selection Office as of 5:00 p.m., Thursday, December 7, 2016, for the Judicial Vacancy in the New Mexico Court of Appeals due to the retirement of The Honorable Roderick Kennedy effective December 1, 2016.

The New Mexico Court of Appeals Judicial Nominating Commission will meet at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 22, 2016, at the Supreme Court Building, 237 Don Gaspar Avenue in Santa Fe, NM, to evaluate the applicants for this position.

One vacancy on the Court of Appeals existed as of November 1, 2016, due to the retirement of The Honorable Michael D. Bustamante. The Appellant Court Judicial Nominating Commission will meet Thursday, December 1, 2016, to interview applicants for this vacancy. The deadline for applications for this vacancy has been set for Thursday, November 17, 2016 at 5:00 pm.

A second vacancy will occur on December 1, 2016 due to the retirement of The Honorable Roderick Kennedy. The District Court Judicial Nominating Commission convened Monday, October 31, 2016, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and completed its evaluation of five (5) applicants for the vacancy on the 2nd Judicial District Court.
