June 20, 2011

Marsha Baum Professor Marsha Baum has authored a chapter titled, "'Room on the Ark?': The Symbolic Nature of U.S. Pet Evacuation Statutes for Nonhuman Animals," which was included in the book, Considering Animals: Contemporary Studies in Human-Animal Relations. The book, published in June 2011, was edited by Carol Freeman, Elizabeth Leane and Yvette Watt, all scholars at the University of Tasmania in Australia.

Baum's chapter was based on a presentation she gave during her time as a visiting scholar at the University of Tasmania in 2007. It also includes material drawn from her 2009 keynote presentation in Brisbane at a Griffith University symposium on animals and disasters.

Considering Animals is a collection of essays from scholars trained in the biological sciences, humanities and social sciences to investigate the complex and contradictory relationships humans have with nonhuman animals.
