Sarah Deer, right, and Nicole Mathews led a discussion on sexual assault in Indian Country recently at the UNM School of Law. Both Native American women are respected victim advocates in Minnesota. Their evening presentation focused on an April 2007 report by Amnesty International that looked at sexual assault survivors in three separate places under three separate policing and judicial arrangements. Deer conducted interviews for the study.
The presentation, sponsored by the Women's Law Caucus, the Native American Law Students Association, Students for Choice and Amnesty International, also was the first Difficult Dialogue of the school year.
