Ruth Kovnat Receives Mary Walters Award

The Women's Law Caucus presented Ruth Kovnat, professor emerita at the UNM School of Law, with the Justice Mary Walters Award during a ceremony at the law school. Kovnat was honored for setting an example as a pioneering woman in the field of law.

In 1971, Kovnat became a tenure-track professor at Temple University School of Law, the first female law professor at the school and among the first wave of female law professors nationwide. Four years later, she joined the faculty of the UNM School of Law, where she remained until retiring in 1999.

During the March ceremony, the Women's Law Caucus also presented Dean Suellyn Scarnecchia with a special award and honored New Mexico Supreme Court Justice Pamela Minzner, who died last August.

Judge Linda Vanzi (`95) of the Second Judicial District delivered the keynote address.
