The Right Honorable Dame Sian Elias, the first woman chief justice of New Zealand, presented the 2008 Ramo Lecture on International Law and Justice to a packed crowd at the UNM School of Law on Oct. 23. The title of her speech was, "First Peoples and Human Rights, a South Seas Perspective."
The lecture explored why addressing indigenous claims and interests continues to challenge legal systems in which first peoples are a minority.
Dame Elias also spent time at the law school, visiting with students and faculty, both informally and in classes.
