Professor Laura Gòmez Receives Award From Hispanic Group

Manifest DestiniesProfessor Laura E. Gòmez has received the 2009 Leadership Award in Arts & Letters from De Colores, Inc. The award was given in recognition of the contribution of her recent book to deepening the knowledge of New Mexico history. The book, Manifest Destinies: The Making of the Mexican American Race, was published in 2007 by New York University Press and has been widely reviewed in both popular and academic venues.
The award was presented on Oct. 16 at De Colores' 17th annual banquet, at the close of Hispanic Heritage Month. De Colores is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization that supports the recognition of Hispanic culture and seeks to recognize the wide-ranging accomplishments of Hispanics to New Mexico. Eleven additional people were recognized, including Christine Trujillo, president of the New Mexico Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO. She received the Lifetime Achievement Award. Four additional awards were presented to high school and college students.
