Gov. Bill Richardson has appointed UNM Professor Laura E. Gómez to the 15-member Governor's Advisory Council on Women's Health, created in 2009. The council advises the state's Women's Health Office, which promotes the health and well-being of New Mexico women and girls.
Gómez, who holds a Ph.D. in sociology and a law degree, is a professor at the law school and in the American Studies Department and a senior fellow at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Center for Health Policy at UNM. With Dr. Nancy López, she co-directs the Institute for the Study of "Race" and Social Justice.
She teaches about gender, racial discrimination and inequality in her various courses, including constitutional law. Among her publications, in 1997, Gómez published the book Misconceiving Mothers: Legislators, Prosecutors and the Politics of Prenatal Drug Exposure, which has been influential in public health and feminist legal theory circles.
