Judge Linda Vanzi (`95) of the New Mexico Court of Appeals has been named the 2012 recipient of the Justice Mary Walters Award, presented annually by the Women’s Law Caucus. This year’s awards dinner will take place at 6 p.m. March 29 at the UNM Student Union Ballroom.
Each year, the Women’s Law Caucus chooses an outstanding woman in the New Mexico legal community to honor in the name of former Justice Mary Walters, who was the first woman appointed to the New Mexico Supreme Court. Walters represents a pioneering spirit for women in the legal community, and the award given in her name stands for courage, strong ethics, leadership and mentorship in the legal field.
Vanzi has been serving on the state Court of Appeals since being appointed in 2008. Previously, she was a judge in the Second Judicial District, appointed in 2004. Her work as a lawyer included a varied practice but mainly consisted of civil rights, labor and employment law, personal injury, child abuse and neglect and commercial law.
She has served as the neutral/chair on the TVI Labor-Relations Board, City of Albuquerque Labor Relations Board and as vice-chair of the State of New Mexico Public Employee Labor Relations Board. Vanzi has also served as the chair of the Uniform Jury Instruction-Civil Committee, the Judicial Education Committee and as the co-chair of the New Mexico State Bar Association’s Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee. She also is actively involved as a volunteer in the community through many civic organizations.
