Students who are entering their second year of law school and are in good standing (G.P.A. of 2.0 or higher) are eligible to apply for membership in the NMLR.
Eligible students participate in a writing competition held at the end of the Spring semester (May - June) for acceptance in the Fall semester.
The competition is administered under the provisions of the Student Code of Conduct ("The Honor Code"), and violations of these rules will be dealt with accordingly. Participants may NOT discuss the competition materials or their paper with anyone, including editing, proofreading and typing. To do so would be an Honor Code violation.
The competition papers are judged anonymously, therefore, the assigned packet number is used on the paper in place of the student's name.
Papers are scored by the current Editorial Board members. Scoring is based upon the quality of the paper as measured by the grammar, spelling, punctuation, style, ALWD citation form, and most importantly, organization and composition.
Acceptees are required to attend training sessions before classes begin. Details are included in the acceptance letter.
As a NMLR staff member (2L), the student is involved in extensive cite-checking and proofreading of articles for publication. Students are also required to write a case note of publishable quality during their first year on staff.
After successful completion of these requirements, the student is eligible for appointment to a position on the Editorial Board (3L members). A third-year student who does not get a board appointment has the option to become an assistant editor or a staff writer and write a comment for possible publication in the Law Review.
As of Spring 1998, the faculty voted to allow case notes and comments written for law journals to satisfy the advanced writing requirement on the same basis as all other writing; namely a faculty member and a second reader must sign off on the written product. Please see your advisor about these requirements.
