Charter Information
UNM Law School organizations must renew their charter at the beginning of each fall semester. You cannot receive your disbursement of the $500 in Dean's funds if you do not charter your organization by September 17th.
The Student Bar Association is responsible for checking the official charter status of law school organizations at the beginning of each fall semester. If an organization has failed to pay dues or has lost its charter due to any reason, the SBA President informs Career & Student Services Assistant Director Bonnie Stepleton of the change in status.
The Student Activities Center (see Registering a Club) is responsible for chartering student organizations. The Student Activities Center provides the forms and explains the fees and charter process. The packet changes each academic year; the SBA has current packets available in the SBA offices.
- Two officers from your organization must attend a mandatory chartering workshop. They are 30 minutes long. They are brief reviews of the policies and procedures and services available to chartered groups. The schedule of workshops is listed on the Student Activities Center (see Registering a Club) site.
- You must fill in the UNM Chartered Student Organization form. You can get a form from the SBA or you can pick one up at the Student Activities Center, Student Services 280, 277-4706. The forms must be returned to the Student Activities Center, SSB 280. Incomplete or illegible forms are returned to the chartering organization.
- One copy of a current constitution and by-laws must be submitted with the chartering form to Student Activities. Therefore, if you are an established organization with a constitution already on file there, you do not need to resubmit one. However, if you have amended your constitution or if you are forming a new organization, you have to file a constitution and by-laws. If your organization is affiliated with a national organization, you must submit one copy of your local by-laws, not the national level constitution or by-laws.
