UNM Student Health & Counseling (SHAC) is a one-stop health service available to all currently enrolled UNM students. SHAC is located on the main campus just north of Johnson Center and across the mall from the Student Union Building. Services include primary medical care, walk-in clinic, pharmacy, women’s and men’s health, allergy and immunization, medical specialty clinics, physical therapy, lab and X-ray, travel health clinic, counseling services, health education and prevention, and a student health advisory committee.
Students are not required to have health insurance to be seen at Student Health & Counseling. However, SHAC recommends that students have insurance to help defray healthcare costs. SHAC can bill many health insurance plans; call 277-3136 to see if they can bill for your insurance plan. For students without health insurance, a health and accident insurance policy is available to students. (See Student Health and Accident Insurance below.)
Fees charged at SHAC are much lower than community rates. Students enrolled for less than six credit hours will pay a higher visit fee. Eligibility guidelines change in the summer; call for clarification. Payment can be made by check, cash, debit card, MasterCard, Visa, or by charging to a student account. For more information on health insurance or SHAC office visit fees, please visit the SHAC website.
Students are encouraged to arrange appointments in advance. Please arrive 15 minutes early for medical appointments to complete necessary paperwork and to check-in at the Reception Area. Medical and counseling appointments and services are available Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm. On Tuesdays, SHAC is closed from 8 am to 9 am. SHAC is closed on all official University holidays.
To schedule a medical appointment, call 277-3136; for counseling appointments, call 277-4537. Students may also be seen on a non-appointment basis for urgent care. For more information, call 277-3136.
Students are not required to have health insurance to be seen at Student Health & Counseling. However, SHAC recommends that all students have insurance to help defray the costs of health care. For students without health insurance, a health and accident insurance policy is available to students enrolled for six or more hours per semester. The plan provides for hospital, surgical, and outpatient medical care beyond that provided by SHAC. The policy is geared to the needs of UNM students and provides coverage for a semester or a 12-month period regardless of geographic location. Also available are: dependent and spouse coverage, optional dental coverage, and additional major medical coverage. The SHAC Insurance Specialist can assist students with insurance claims and other insurance issues.
UNM requires all international students and their dependents to have health coverage while enrolled. The UNM student health and accident insurance policy will meet this requirement.
For more information, please call the Insurance Specialist at Student Health & Counseling at 277-7943 or 277-3136.

Licensed pharmacists fill prescriptions for UNM students, faculty, staff, and retirees. They fill prescriptions from all licensed practitioners, including providers outside of UNM. The pharmacy sells reasonably-priced, over-the-counter drugs and orthopedic braces. The pharmacy also provides education and counseling on proper drug usage, interactions, and side effects. The pharmacy is a prescription provider for the Student Health Insurance plan and many other insurance companies. An insurance card must be shown at the time of service.
