Chief Judge Nan Nash and First Assistant Federal Public Defender Margaret Katze Named 2017 Justice Mary Walters Honorees.

Nash and Katze to be recognized at Awards Dinner March 22, 2017 from 5:30-8:30 in Ballroom B at the Student Union Building on UNM’s Main Campus. 5:30-6:30 will be a happy hour, and dinner will begin thereafter.

Judge Sarah Singleton of the First Judicial District will be providing opening remarks.

Each year the Women's Law Caucus chooses two outstanding women in the New Mexico legal community to honor in the name of former Justice Mary Walters, who was the first woman appointed to the New Mexico Supreme Court. In 2017 the WLC will honor Chief Judge Nan Nash and First Assistant Federal Public Defender Margaret Katze.

Chief Judge Nan G. Nash

Nan G. Nash was appointed to the New Mexico Second Judicial District Court Bench, Division XVII in January 2003. Judge Nash served as presiding judge of the SJDC Family Court from December 2004 through September 2007. She joined the Civil Division in September 2007. Judge Nash was elected as Chief Judge of the SJDC in April 2014.

Prior to joining the bench, Judge Nash served as a Special Commissioner of Domestic Violence and a Child Support Hearing Officer for the Second Judicial District Court. She has served on numerous task forces and committees addressing family violence and family law issues including chairing the Supreme Court Domestic Relations Task Force. Judge Nash began her career with the Second Judicial District Court as the director of Court Alternatives. She remains active in the alternative dispute resolution community. She taught ADR related courses as an adjunct professor at the University of New Mexico School of Law since 1994, most recently teaching Family Mediation Training from 1999 through 2015.

Judge Nash currently serves as Chair of the Supreme Court Access to Justice Commission and recently completed an eight year term on the New Mexico Judicial Standards Commission. Her work as chief judge has focused on criminal pretrial reform, the elder and disability initiative and the fiscal and administrative management of the court. Judge Nash is a graduate of Indiana University School of Law and practiced with the firm of Civerolo, Gralow & Hill, P.A. before joining the Court.

Margaret Katze

Margaret Katze has an extensive resume. She worked at the Legal Aid Society of New York City, Criminal Defense Division in Brooklyn, the Navajo Nation Department of Justice, the New Mexico State Public Defender Department, the Federal Defender's Office of the Western District of Texas (El Paso) and the Federal Defender's Office for the District of New Mexico. She is currently the First Assistant in the District of New Mexico Federal Defender's Office.
