Veteran Law Society (VLS)

ARTICLE I: NAME 

The name of this organization shall be Veteran Law Society hereafter referred to as VSL. 

ARTICLE II: PURPOSE 

The purpose(s) of this organization shall be: The Veteran Law Society is a service-based organization which seeks to foster connections and understanding between law school students and the larger veteran community of New Mexico. VLS works to provide military legal educational opportunities to both law school students and civilians in the community, with an emphasis on broadening understanding between civilians, veterans, and military members, as well as advocating for access to veteran benefits. VLS partners with other veteran organizations in order to better serve the community by providing legal resources, support, and education.  

ARTICLE III: MEMBERSHIP   

  1. Student Members: Membership is open to any currently enrolled UNM student who –  

    1) Is in good standing with the Law School 

    2)Must be enrolled in at least six hours of classes  
    Revocation of Membership 
    Revocation of membership is applicable upon violation of standards listed above in § A  
    ARTICLE IV: VOTING 

    Section 1: Quorum  

A quorum shall be _2/3rds of membership________________________  

[Establish a set number of members that are required for the organization to conduct business.  Usually, stated as a fraction of the number of members, such as 2/3 or ¾] 

Section 2: Each member must be in good standing to vote [In compliance with Article III stipulations] 

Section 3: Simple majority shall decide amendments, offices, and other ancillary issues taken to vote.  

ARTICLE V: OFFICERS 

Section 1:  Eligibility

Student in good standing with the Law School.  

Section 2: Officer Duties 

President/Co-President: Management of meetings, promotion of organization, attendance at board meetings, liaison with Law School and University, management of recruitment.  

Vice President: Attendance at board meetings, promotion of organization, management of trips and events, management of promotional materials for organization.  

Treasurer: Attendance at board meetings, management of organization funds.  

Secretary: Attendance at board meetings, taking minutes at board meetings, management of archive of minutes and notes.  

Section 3: Terms of Office  

Board members will serve the length of an academic year.  

Section 4: Elections 

Elections will be held once annually, no more than two months before the beginning of the academic semester.  

Section 5: Officer Removal 

Officers are subject to removal for violation of Law School ethics standards. Removal of an officer will trigger an automatic special election, subject to the election standards mentioned above.  

ARTICLE VI: ADVISORS 

Advisors will serve an entire academic year. Advisors are expected to provide leadership and guidance to the organization, as well as to co-facilitate after school events.  

ARTICLE VII: MEETINGS 

Board meetings will be held no less than once monthly at the law school. General membership meetings will be held no less than three times per semester at the law school.  

ARTICLE VIII: QUORUM 

A quorum consists of 2/3 of organization membership.  

ARTICLE IX: AMENDMENTS 

Amendments are proposed by any member during general meetings and are subject to vote no later than the next general meeting at which a quorum is present.
