Professor Gauna entered academia in 1991, when she accepted a faculty appointment at Southwestern University School of Law in Los Angeles, California, and was subsequently appointed to the UNM law faculty.

Professor Gauna has written about and worked extensively on environmental justice matters, and has co-authored a widely used casebook in the area.
