A Unique Place to Study
The Business Law faculty is interested in exploring the connections between two strands of economic development: hi-tech entrepreneurship, such as technology startups from the nearby national laboratories, and micro-enterprise, which brings the community together through small businesses.
With its unique geographic and ethnic environment, New Mexico is the perfect place to learn about both of these strands of economic development. The state is both urban (Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Las Cruces), and rural, with vast expanses of rangeland and small towns. Additionally, more than 20 sovereign tribal nations lie in the state, along with many Hispanic and immigrant communities. New Mexico is a border state and was the first majority minority state in the U.S.
The New Mexico economy is also unique. The state's population continues to grow, providing many opportunities in real estate transactions, and a thriving film and fine art community has opened up more areas for law students. The School of Law's proximity to two national laboratories fuels many hi-tech start-up businesses in the area, creating unique work opportunities for our graduates. Finally, Forbes and other national magazines extol Albuquerque as one of the best places in the country in which to live and start a business.
