Matthew Murrell teaches commercial law, technology law, and intellectual property law. His courses include Contracts, Business Associations, the Law of Artificial Intelligence, and Intellectual Property. Matthew’s research focuses on the law of emerging digital technologies, including cyborgs and cybernetic medical devices, quantum computers, and artificial intelligence. Matthew holds several technological certifications, including Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional (AIGP), Certified Information Privacy Professional for the United States and Europe (CIPP/US, CIPP/E), and Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM).
Matthew’s legal career has long been at the intersection of technology and the law. Before joining the University of New Mexico, Matthew was a Lecturer at the University of Texas School of Law, where he taught legal research and writing during the emergence of generative AI. He also pioneered and taught the Law of Artificial Intelligence for the first time that course was ever offered at Texas Law. Prior to teaching, Matthew practiced complex commercial litigation in Austin for eight years, where he focused on intellectual property and technology disputes, often involving startup companies. His clients covered a range of industries, including telecommunications, artificial intelligence, software-as-a-service, entertainment, food and beverage, financial services, real estate development, and wealth management.
Matthew attended law school at Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, DC, where he graduated cum laude and served as Managing Editor of the Georgetown Law Journal. During law school, Matthew interned for the Honorable Ellen Segal Huvelle on the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. After law school, Matthew clerked for the Honorable Catherine Easterly on the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.
Away from campus, Matthew loves spending time with his wife and son. He’s also a lifelong musician and has over three decades of participation, coaching, and involvement in the high school speech and debate community.
