Student Health and Counseling

Student Health and Counseling (SHAC), an accredited outpatient, medical, and mental health clinic, is located on Main Campus north of Johnson Center and east of the Student Union Building. SHAC provides comprehensive, quality health and counseling services to UNM enrolled students. Services provided are affordable as they are much lower than community rates in part to being partially funded by student activity fees.

To schedule an appointment, call 277-3136. Students may also be seen on a non-appointment basis for urgent care. Payment can be made by check, cash, debit card, MasterCard, Visa, or by charging to a student account.

Physical Health

While students are not required to have health insurance to be seen at Student Health & Counseling, it is highly recommended to help defray healthcare costs. For students without health insurance, an insurance navigator is available for students. Please check our website for more information on insurances accepted or how to schedule an appointment with a navigator. If students are working for the university as a graduate assistant, teaching assistant, etc., our website also provides a link to the HR website for the UNM Student Health Plan.

Students are encouraged to arrange appointments in advance by calling our clinic. Please arrive 15 minutes early for your appointment to complete necessary paperwork and to check-in at the Reception Area. Please bring your insurance card.

Mental Health

Counseling Services are available to all enrolled UNM Main Campus students to help them function successfully in their academic lives. When students are challenged by excessive stress or difficult personal problems, psychological and/or psychiatric support may be helpful or necessary. Online tools such as Therapy Assistance Online are also available for students to utilize free of charge. UNM School of Law, in collaboration with SHAC, has an on-sight mental health provider accessible to students.

Confidentiality is essential for effective treatment. All licensed mental health providers are bound by ethics and the law to maintain client confidentiality. For this reason, counseling records are not connected in any way to university records or official transcripts.

Pharmacy

SHAC has a full-service pharmacy for our students providing prescription refills and reasonably priced, over-the-counter drugs items. The pharmacy also provides education and counseling on proper drug usage, interactions, and side effects at no cost to students. For pharmacy insurance information, please visit our website.
