Professor Alfred Mathewson Receives Inaugural Luminaria Award

Professor Alfred Mathewson was the recipient of a Presidential Luminaria Award, a new university honor recognizing diversity efforts of faculty, staff and students across the campus of the University of New Mexico.
Mathewson, who is also serving as acting director of Africana Studies, received the award at the first Diversity Celebration and Fundraising Dinner in late April. Winona LaDuke, a renowned writer, economist and environmentalist, was the keynote speaker and Hector Pimental provided entertainment at a silent auction preceding the dinner.
Funds raised at the event will benefit ethnic centers and diversity programs across campus.
Also receiving a Luminaria Award were:
Political Science Professor Gabriel Sanchez, the custodial staff in the biology department, Christopher Ramirez with College Enrichment and Outreach Programs and Native Health Initiatives.
“Those who were honored deserve the recognition and support from the university and broader community,” said Jozi DeLeon, vice president of Equity and Inclusion at UNM. “This is just one step in our path toward a greater understanding and appreciation of true diversity.”
