Professor Marsha Baum Gives Keynote Address to Meteorologists

February 6, 2012

Professor Marsha Baum Professor Marsha Baum was the invited keynote speaker at the Certified Consulting Meteorologists Forum on Ethics, which took place at the American Meteorological Society (AMS) Annual Meeting in New Orleans in late January.

Baum was invited because of the regular use of her book, When Nature Strikes: Weather Disasters and the Law, (published in 2007 by Praeger Publishing) by the program organizer and other meteorologists.

Her talk was entitled, "Is It Law or Is It Ethics?", and discussed differences between liability under the law and the impact of the obligations of licensed professionals. Following her presentation and the discussion of the many questions elicited from the audience by her talk, Baum participated on a panel on ethics that included certified consulting meteorologists and an ethics compliance officer from the corporate sector.

Baum's book won a CHOICE award in 2008 from Atmospheric Sciences Librarians Association, which was presented at that year's AMS annual meeting.
