Free Income Tax Controversy Fair for Low-Income Individuals
September 29, 2015 - Tamara Williams
Low-income individuals who have income tax problems with the IRS can get brief advice from UNM Clinical Law Students at an upcoming free Income Tax Controversy Fair. Consultations will focus on self-help alternatives; the Clinical Law Programs cannot promise continuing representation beyond the brief consultation available at the Fair.
The Fair will take place on Saturday, October 17, 2015 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the UNM School of Law. Interested parties should register first by calling 505-277-5265.
Third-year law students, supervised by licensed attorneys, will talk with those:
- challenged by the IRS on the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, Head of Household Status or Dependency Exemption;
- who have a case in the U.S. Tax Court but who don’t have a lawyer; and/or
- who owe money to the IRS and can’t pay.
Participants should bring to the Fair all letters and notices received from or sent to the IRS (or the U.S. Tax Court) about their disputes, including related federal income tax returns.
Translation services will be available for Spanish speakers. No tax returns will be prepared at the Fair.
The Income Tax Controversy Fair is sponsored by the UNM Low Income Taxpayer Clinic, which is part of the UNM Law School’s Business and Tax Clinic.
The UNM School of Law is located at 1117 Stanford N.E., Albuquerque. Free parking is available in the L lot next to the Law School; do not use the for-pay parking spaces.
