When he first became a law professor, Professor Kevin Washburn began writing about the problems in criminal justice in Indian country. Now he is considered the leading scholar in the field.

Recently, the Santa Fe New Mexican asked for his expertise and views in the Santa Fe New Mexican article “Mother’s call for death penalty challenges beliefs on Navajo Nation.”

Washburn discussed both sides of the death penalty debate but argued that “pursuing the death penalty against tribal members would exacerbate the disparities Native Americans already encounter in the federal courts.”
