Frederick Douglass Moot Court Team brings home numerous awards from Black Law Student Association Western Region Competition

The University of New Mexico School of Law Frederick Douglass Moot Court Team swept three regional awards for their efforts in the recent Black Law Student Association Western Region Competition. The team is composed of students Sara Klemundt (Class of ’19) and Valentina Basile (Class of ’19) and Professor Emerita Barbara P. Blumenfeld, as coach.  The National Black Law Student Association sponsored the team as it travelled to San Francisco to participate in the competition from January 4 through 6. The team argued on issues regarding a cross-border shooting and issues concerning both the 4th Amendment and damage remedies in a Bivens claim.

The judges recognized the team’s determination by awarding the team First Place overall in the competition. Additionally, the team won the award for Best Petitioner's Brief, and Klemundt earned the award for Best Oral Advocate. The team moves on to represent the Western Region of the Black Law Student Association at Nationals held in Brooklyn, New York in March 2018.
