New Mexico Press Women (NMPW), New Mexico's largest inclusive media organization, held a banquet Saturday, April 28th in Santa Fe, NM. At the banquet, UNM School of Law Professor Emerita Sherri Burr, Dickason Chair and Regents Professor of Law, was named NMPW president. As the new NM Press Women President, Professor Burr has stated that her goal will be to bring a National Federation of Press Women Conference to Albuquerque in 2021. At the last NFPW conference in 1990 in Albuquerque, over three hundred journalists from New Mexico and around the nation participated in various events.

Two of Professor Burr’s former UNM Law students, Kathy Pack Casaus and David Gomez both attended the event with their spouses, Phil Casaus and Inez Russel Gomez, who were representing The Santa Fe New Mexican, a conference sponsor. “Kathy Pack was in the first class I taught in 1988 at the UNM School of Law, and is now a principle at Bel Air Elementary School in Albuquerque. David Gomez took Property from me in 1991, and graduated in 1993. He was an award-winning journalist before coming to law school, and is now a leading Indian Law attorney in Santa Fe”, said Burr.

According to NMPW, a highlight of the conference was a Friday evening event billed as a conversation between professor and author Sherri Burr and Hampton Sides, author of Blood and Thunder, Ghost Soldiers, Hellhound on his Trail, In the Kingdom of Ice: The Grand and Terrible Voyage of the USS Jeannette, Americana: Dispatches from the New Frontier and On Desperate Ground: The Marines at the Reservoir, the Korean War’s Greatest Battle. On their website,NMPW shared that the discussion revolved around techniques for approaching a complex non-fiction story and how to break it into easy-to-handle pieces, as well as finding stories that need to be told. Sides and Burr also discussed how and where to write, and how to research when information is scattered.
