The 2026 Madrid Summer Law Institute

The 2026 Madrid Summer Law Institute welcomed 34 students for a month of study at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos in Madrid, Spain. The ABA-approved program, offered jointly by the University of New Mexico and Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, allows students to earn five law school credits while studying law in an international setting.
This year, students studied International Business Transactions, International and Comparative Law of Economic and Climate Migration, and Law of the European Union with U.S. and Spanish law professors.
In addition to their coursework, students participated in two field trips. At the Madrid Bar Association, they learned about the process of becoming an attorney in the European Union.
Students also visited the Government Delegation in the Community of Madrid for a tour and presentation by Professor Pilar Trinidad, Deputy Government Delegate and a former professor in the Madrid Summer Law Institute. Professor Trinidad discussed current legal and governmental issues in Spain, including the country’s recent regularization process for undocumented immigrants.
Through their coursework and experiences in Madrid, students gained an international perspective on legal systems and practice.
