Named Scholarship Opportunities at the University of New Mexico School of Law

Investing in law school is both a personal and financial commitment. The Admissions and Financial Aid team at the University of New Mexico School of Law is here to help you find ways to make your education more affordable. Our alumni and friends of the law school have generously donated to over 50 named scholarships to support our students.

Some scholarship opportunities require an additional application to be submitted. Other scholarship opportunities do not require an additional application and candidates are automatically considered for these opportunities based on admissions materials for entering first-year students and current law school records for second and third-year students. Applicants and students interested in being considered for any scholarships offered by the law school that have a need-based component must fill out the FAFSA application.

Scholarships That Require Additional Application

Please read through these opportunities below to find out more about each of these scholarships. However, scholarships that have a need-based component do require that applicants submit the FAFSA application by March 1st, 2022. Burck and Sandra Bailey Scholarship in Law

The Burck and Sandra Bailey Scholarship in Law was established by Burck Bailey, an attorney from Oklahoma, and his wife Sandra Bailey. Upon retirement, the Baileys moved to Santa Fe and established the scholarship to make a difference in their adopted state. This need-based award provides that a preference shall be given for Native American applicants and/or applicants demonstrating leadership in Hispanic or African American communities.

This scholarship will be awarded once every three years. The next available award will be for the Fall 2021 incoming 1L class.

Captain Richard Lynn Klein Scholarship

The Captain Richard L. Klein Scholarship was established at the law school in memory of Richard L. Klein, a 1971 graduate. To apply, a student must submit an unofficial law school transcript (first-year students submit undergraduate transcripts) with a resume and a cover letter explaining why he/she is best qualified to receive the scholarship. In addition, the following criteria must be met: demonstrate financial need, be enrolled as a full-time student and be an active or former member of the United States Marine Corps.

Carlos F. Vigil Memorial Scholarship

Carlos F. Vigil was an attorney who had an extraordinary sense of justice and commitment to the defense of those persons who most needed caring and effective representation in the courts of law. He served the poor, the impoverished and the most helpless members of the community, assisting many people for little or no compensation. To apply, a student must submit a law school transcript (first-year applicants submit undergraduate transcripts), a resume detailing his/her experience, and a cover letter (1,000 words maximum) explaining why he/she is best qualified to receive the scholarship according to the following criteria: Demonstrated commitment upon graduation and during law school, to the extent possible, to provide legal services (primarily, but not limited to, criminal defense) to low-income New Mexico Hispanics; Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the history, culture and social customs of northern New Mexico Hispanic communities; Demonstrated commitment in the past to serving the low-income Hispanic community through civic, educational, or community organizations or employment; A well-rounded undergraduate experience, academic proficiency and financial need.

Child and Family Justice Scholarship

Exciting social justice learning and advocacy opportunity! Become a Child and Family Justice Advocate. Advocates will receive a $15,000 tuition scholarship as a lump sum payment by September, 2022, plus a onetime $5,000 stipend to support experiential learning, such as a nonprofit-based externship. In exchange, Advocates will complete program requirements and commit to working on behalf of vulnerable children and families in New Mexico for two years after graduation by addressing racial and social inequities in a wide variety of sectors, including education, criminal defense, environmental justice, health, civil rights, and more.

The Child and Family Justice Advocates Program aims to create a cadre of social justice lawyers. These lawyers provide holistic, preventative legal and policy advocacy on behalf of New Mexico’s most marginalized and underserved children and families by addressing racial and social inequities, health-harming legal needs, and other pressing issues that prevent children and their families from thriving (including poverty, immigration status, food and housing insecurity, interpersonal violence, and much more). During their law school experience, Advocates are expected to:

  • Participate in periodic Advocate community building and mentoring meetings;
  • Attend the Social Justice Lunchbox speaker series;
  • participate in stipend-funded experiential learning at a relevant non-profit organization, civil legal services provider, or state or tribal court or agency.
  • Complete the Child and Family Justice Section of the Law Clinic or SILC (although other clinic sections may be approved on a case-by-case basis)

To apply please submit a resume and a personal statement (1,500 words maximum) explaining 1) what child- and family-related social justice and/or diverse community service experience(s) you have had and what they mean to you; 2) what racial and social inequities you have experienced or observed in New Mexico and how you see legal advocacy as a way to address these issues; and 3) why you are committed to serving NM’s most underserved populations.

Please be sure to include any creative ideas you have had about how to address racial and social inequity and improving child and family well-being in New Mexico.

The selection criteria include: responses to these questions and a demonstrated commitment to racial equity and improving the welfare of New Mexico’s underserved and marginalized children and families. Diversity of background and experience, tribal enrollment, and interest in service to Native American communities are highly valued.

Family Law Section of the State Bar Scholarship

The State Bar of New Mexico Family Law Section Scholarship was established to provide tuition support to second- and third-year law students at the University of New Mexico School of Law. This scholarship provides assistance to a candidate who has an interest in practicing in the area of family/domestic relations law. This scholarship will be awarded to a full-time 2L or 3L student who demonstrates financial need and a commitment to the New Mexico family law community. To apply, please submit a document of no more than 500 words demonstrating your interest in and experience with Family Law and explaining why you are best qualified to receive this scholarship.

Henry S. Glascock Memorial Scholarship

The Henry S. Glascock Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Henry S. Glascock, a Gallup attorney. This award is offered to a law student who demonstrates both financial need and academic achievement. In addition, the recipient must show an interest in the area of natural resource law. Applicants interested in being considered for this opportunity must submit a statement of interest, a current resume, and current transcript.

James E. Sperling Memorial Scholarship

The James E. Sperling Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a student demonstrating academic achievement and financial need for scholarship assistance. Students must be enrolled as full-time students in the school of law and demonstrate an interest in the field of natural resources law.

James Quinn Memorial Scholarship

The James Quinn Memorial Scholarship includes an award of $1,000 during the recipient's first year of enrollment at the UNM School of Law, both 1L and incoming transfer students are eligible to apply. Applicants should demonstrate commitment to pursuing conservation and sustainability through environmental law. The applicant should show strong potential to make outstanding contributions to the law school, the environment, ethics, and sustainability. A strong preference will be given to individuals interested in water law related issues. Interested applicants should submit a written statement addressing these qualities and their interest in environmental law, an unofficial transcript from their previous institutions, and a current resume.

Judge Mayo T. Boucher

The Judge Mayo T. Boucher Scholarship, established in memory of Judge Boucher, is awarded to a second- or third-year student with substantial ties to Valencia County. To apply, please submit an unofficial transcript, a resume and a letter of no more than 500 words demonstrating your ties to Valencia County and explaining why you are best qualified to receive the Boucher Award.

Judge Oliver Seth Memorial Scholarship

The Judge Oliver Seth Memorial Scholarship was established to honor of Judge Oliver Seth, who served on the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit for over 35 years. The annual scholarship is awarded to one or more second- or third-year students who show promise in the areas of legal ethics and/or mediation. Recipients are selected on the basis of merit.

Julio Romero & Rebekah Gallegos Scholarship

The scholarship was established by UNM Law graduates Julio Romero ('14) & Rebekah Gallegos ('14) in 2021. The scholarship is to be awarded to an incoming student who is the first lawyer in his/her immediate famlily (parents, grandparents or siblings) An essay submission is required for consideration of eligibility.

Justice Patricio M. Serna Scholarship

The "Justice Patricio M. Serna - Education: Path to the American Dream Scholarship" was established in honor of Retired New Mexico Supreme Court Justice Patricio M. Serna upon his retirement from the bench in 2012. The scholarship includes a $4,000 award during the recipient's first year of enrollment at the UNM School of Law. The continuation of this scholarship for the second and third year will be based upon an end of the academic year review and evaluation. A unique and exclusive aspect of the scholarship includes one-on-one mentorship from Retired Justice Serna from the point of award of the scholarship, throughout the three years in the student's academic career, and even as the student prepares for the New Mexico State Bar exam and entry. Retired Justice Serna will also personally move to admit the recipient into the New Mexico Bar. Candidates for this scholarship should provide evidence of academic excellence in high school and post-secondary studies and demonstrate financial need. Additional consideration will be given to candidates with a history of leadership in academic organizations and/or civic groups, a demonstrated commitment to community services, and parallels with the life of Justice Serna.

This scholarship will be awarded once every three years. The next available award will be for the Fall 2022 incoming 1L class.

Maria and Roberto Hernandez Scholarship is a $2500 per year Any full-time student attending the University of New Mexico School of Law.

All eligible applicants must submit a short personal statement describing how the candidate qualifies for the Scholarship, a resume and unofficial transcript.

Demonstrate financial need.

Be a New Mexico resident, New Mexico high school graduate or establish an otherwise significant connection to New Mexico; (Preference given to residents of Southeastern New Mexico)

Demonstrate a commitment to issues of importance to the Hispanic community and commitment to serving the Hispanic community after graduation.

The Cochran scholarship is awarded to a second- or third-year student who has demonstrated commitment to serving the Black community, including service to civic, educational and religious organizations. This service can be in the form of volunteer or paid positions, and should evidence leadership abilities. The recipient of this award must also have demonstrated academic achievement.

New Mexico Hispanic Bar Association Foundation Scholarship

The New Mexico Hispanic Bar Association Foundation Scholarship was established by the New Mexico Hispanic Bar Association to provide tuition support to an incoming, first year JD student at the University of New Mexico School of Law. This scholarship provides assistance to a candidate who demonstrates financial need; is a New Mexico resident, a New Mexico high school graduate, or has other significant ties to New Mexico; is committed to issues of importance to the Hispanic Community and is committed to serving the Hispanic Community after graduation; and shows a history of community involvement particularly with the Hispanic Community. Some consideration will also be given to prior academic achievement, the candidate's intent to remain in NM following graduation, and any other circumstances the candidate would like the committee to consider.

Ray M. Vargas, II Endowed Scholarship for Aspiring Trial Lawyers

Vargas, II Endowed Scholarship for Aspiring Trial Lawyers is awarded to a second- or third-year student who has a demonstrated interest plaintiff/trial work including the related subjects of evidence, trial practice, civil procedure, pre-trial practice, client counseling, and/or professional responsibility. It is understood that not all candidates will have taken extensive coursework in these areas. Preference will be given to applicants who are New Mexico residents, are student members of the New Mexico Trial Lawyers Association, or have participated in Mock Trial.

Real Property Trust and Estate Section of the State Bar

The Real Property Trust and Estate Section of the State Bar is dedicated to providing opportunities that cultivate an interest in careers in the areas of real property and trust and estates. The RPTE Section is offering two scholarships; one to students interested in pursuing a career in Real Property and one to students interested in pursuing a career in Trust and Estate law. The RPTE Section will award the scholarships during the first semester of your 3rd year.

Richard C. Civerolo Family Scholarship

The Richard C. Civerolo Family Scholarship was established through a generous donation by the Richard C. Civerolo family. The merit-based scholarship is awarded using a number of criteria, including LSAT scores, GPA, and community involvement prior to being admitted to law school. Half of the award is made available to the recipient at the start of the student's first semester of law school. The second half is awarded at the beginning of the student's second semester, provided the student maintains a 3.0 GPA.

Richard Gonzales Employment and Labor Law Scholarship

The Richard Gonzales Employment and Labor Law Scholarship will be awarded to a second- or third-year law student interested in a career in employment and/or labor law. To apply, you must submit an unofficial law school transcript, resume detailing your experience and a cover letter (1,000 words maximum) explaining why you are best qualified to receive the scholarship. Applications will be reviewed by the selection committee, comprised of law school faculty, a member of the State Bar's Employment and Labor Section and the assistant dean of admissions and financial aid.

Rudolf & Betty Schware Scholarship in Labor Law

Employment

The recipient of the Rudolf & Betty Schware Scholarship in Labor Law should demonstrate interest in labor law, preferably from the perspective of trade union movement, meaning not from the perspective of corporations or small business. The awardee shall make arrangements to attend, as observers, various trade union meetings in the course of their studies in law school.

The Daniel A. Sisk Scholarship in Legal Ethics was established to support individuals who have demonstrated in action, service and character the ethical behavior, integrity and professionalism exemplified in the life and work of Daniel A. Sisk, a dedicated New Mexican attorney who was known for his legal scholarship, strong sense of public service and integrity. Those who had the privilege of knowing Daniel Sisk remember him as a kind person always ready to help others and as a man who was never heard to utter an unkind word about anyone. Daniel A. Sisk treated everyone he met with openness, respect and dignity, and loved New Mexico, its peoples, cultures and potential. Applicants must explain in what ways they are best qualified to receive this prestigious scholarship in accordance with the guidelines below.

This three-year full cost of attendance (tuition, fees, books, room and board) ( http://lawschool.unm.edu/admissions/financial-aid/tuition.html merit scholarship is available to incoming law students and is awarded at that time for all three years of study. Some consideration may also be given for need. Successful candidates will have demonstrated meritorious academic achievement and must: A) Provide significant examples of strong academic achievement, including but not limited to, undergraduate and/or graduate performance (GPAs, LSAT score), extra-curricular achievements, honors, awards and/or other relevant recognition(s); B) complete the Daniel A. Sisk Scholarship in Legal Ethics application essay; C) maintain a minimum GPA of 3.20 while in law school to remain eligible for the award; D) maintain a record of professional and ethical conduct while in law school; and E) have a demonstrated interest and willingness to practice law in the state of New Mexico.

Eligibility criteria provides that a preference shall be given to New Mexico residents for this memorial scholarship. In exceptional cases where no New Mexico resident applies for and qualifies for the scholarship, a non-resident may be identified by the School of Law as the most meritorious recipient and the scholarship may be awarded to a non-resident.

In addition to their completed law school application, applicants must submit their Daniel A. Sisk Scholarship in Legal Ethics eligibility essay, up to five pages, and a resume or curriculum vitae.

The Kathryn and Ted Parnall Scholarship for Law as an Instrument of Economic Growth and Social Development

The Kathryn and Ted Parnall Scholarship for Law as an Instrument of Economic Growth and Social Development is intended for a student who understands that law is more than a means of dispute resolution, and that it can be an important tool for both domestic and international economic development and a more equitable restructuring of the social order. This scholarship is primarily merit-based for full-time 2L or 3L law students. Applicants LSAT scores and cumulative law school GPA will be used to establish merit, however some consideration may also be given for need. Applicants must submit a short essay, up to five pages, describing how the law can be used for domestic or international economic and social development.

The McBryde Scholarship for Non-Traditional Students

The McBryde Scholarship for Non-Traditional Students was established in 2018 by graduate, Deian McBryde. The scholarship of $500 will be awarded to a first-, second-, or third-year student who entered law school with 20 years or more prior experience in the workforce and/or in the home. To apply, please submit a resume that includes at least 20 years of prior work and/or home-making experience and a short essay (around 500-700 words) entitled “Why I Chose Law School to Improve My Life.” The strongest essays will focus on a student’s plans to change or improve the quality of life for the student and/or their family by becoming a lawyer. Non-traditional students have many career options; therefore, the essay may also tell the practical story of why the student chose law school, rather than another profession or career, as their path to the future. Applications will be reviewed by an external committee.

The R. Edward Garcia Scholarship

The R. Edward Garcia Memorial Scholarship was established by Yolanda M. Garcia, mother of Ralph Edward ("Eddie") Garcia (UNM School of Law Class of 2001). Upon graduating from the UNM School of Law, Eddie worked in the Public Defender's Office with dedication because he felt the gravity of his position and the impact it had on individuals who are otherwise unable to afford legal services. He saw how one could help a large number of individuals realize their right to counsel in accordance with our Constitution. This memorial fund provides assistance to current UNM School of Law students interested in pursuing public interest law. This award is a need-based award for a second- or third year law student who demonstrates an interest in public interest law. Preference will be given to law students of Hispanic descent.

Tim Vigil Scholarship

The Tim Vigil Scholarship is awarded to an individual who has demonstrated an interest in working in public interest law, providing access to the justice system for low income individuals and disadvantaged communities in rural and other underserved areas of Northern New Mexico.

Toby Grossman Memorial Scholarship

The Toby Grossman Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a first-year Native student who demonstrates a high potential for success in law school and who has close ties and a demonstrated commitment to a Native community.

Scholarships That Do Not Require Additional Application

The scholarships listed below do not require the additional supplemental application including a statement, resume, and transcript. However, scholarships that have a need-based component do require that applicants submit the FAFSA application. All other scholarships in the section below will be based off of the applicant's admissions file or the current student's performance in law school.

Alfred L. Gausewitz Memorial Scholarship

The Dean Alfred L. Gausewitz Scholarship was established by the Albuquerque Bar Association to honor the legacy of the of the University of New Mexico School of Law's first dean, Alfred Leroy Gausewitz. Beginning in 1947 with only three rooms and a library of 11,000 books located on the second floor of Zimmerman Field's grandstand, he oversaw the construction of a dedicated law building and quadrupled the size of the law library by the time he retired in 1958. The scholarship is awarded to a deserving second- or third-year law student on the basis of merit and need.

School of Law Alumni Association Scholarship

The UNM School of Law Alumni Board and Alumni Association are proud to offer this merit-based scholarship. This scholarship provides full in-state tuition to one student from each incoming class for all three years of law school. Candidates for this scholarship are nominated by the Admissions Committee to the Alumni Association Board. Decisions are based on the candidates' personal statements from their admissions application. Awardees must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.20 while in Law School to remain eligible for this award.

Anna K. Resigner Scholarship

Resigner Scholarship was established in 1963 by Anna Resigner of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. The scholarship is awarded to a student who shows promise of making a substantial contribution to society.

Babs McEnearney & Margarita Stelzner Scholarship

The Babs McEnearney and Margarita Stelzner Scholarship was established to provide support to a student pursuing his/her Juris Doctorate at the University of New Mexico. This scholarship was established by former UNM Law Professor Louis Stelzner and his wife, Pat Stelzner a UNM Law graduate ('82), in memory of their mothers. This scholarship will be awarded to an incoming, full-time 1L student who demonstrates financial need and academic achievement. The chosen candidate will receive this award for each of his/her three years while attending the UNM School of Law. This award will be made once every three years. The next award will be made to a candidate for the Fall 2023 incoming 1L class.

C. M. Botts Memorial Scholarship

Carl P. Dunifon and Erma W. Dunifon Scholarship

The Carl P. Dunifon and Erma W. Dunifon Scholarship was established in recognition of Carl P. Dunifon, an attorney, and his wife Erma W. Dunifon, a former school teacher, who made their home in Albuquerque. The scholarship is awarded to a full-time, degree-seeking student in the School of Law who has demonstrated academic achievement and financial need for scholarship assistance. Preference is given to relatives of Carl P. Dunifon or Erma W. Dunifon and single students without children.

Donald D. Montoya Memorial Scholarship

The Donald D. Montoya Endowed Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Donald D. Montoya, a Santa Fe attorney. The scholarship is awarded to a full-time, first-year law student who demonstrates academic achievement and financial need for scholarship assistance. Preference is given to students who are graduates of New Mexico high schools.

Frederick M. & Joan M. Hart Opportunity Scholarship

The Frederick M. & Joan M. Hart Opportunity Scholarship Fund is named for beloved former Dean and Professor Fred Hart and his wife, Joan, for their extensive and tireless support of the UNM School of Law. The award is established for students interested in the study of law and pursuit of a legal career who would otherwise be wholly unable to do so.

Helene Simson Memorial Scholarship

The Helene Simson Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Helene Simson, a professor in the School of Law known for her exceptional charm, intelligence, and grace. The award is offered to a law student who demonstrates a need for financial assistance.

Hoshour Memorial Scholarship

The Hoshour Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship awarded to a student demonstrating academic achievement and an active and effective interest in law school affairs, with some consideration for need.

Howard Bratton Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of Judge Howard Bratton who served as a judge on the US District Court for the District of New Mexico for over 30 years, including nine years as chief judge from 1978 to 1987. Prior to his appointment, Judge Bratton worked in private practice in both Albuquerque and Roswell, NM. This scholarship is awarded to a deserving law student each year on the basis of need and merit.

Judge J.V. Gallegos Memorial Scholarship

The Judge J.V. Gallegos Memorial Scholarship was established to honor Judge J.V. Gallegos who served as District Judge in the 10th Judicial District of New Mexico. Prior to being appointed District Judge, he served as the City Attorney of Tucumcari, New Mexico and an Assistant District Attorney. The scholarship is awarded to a student who is a New Mexico Resident who demonstrates academic achievement and/or financial need.

A preference is given to candidates of Hispanic descent.

Indian Law General Scholarship Fund

The Indian Law General Scholarship provides financial support to Native American applicants pursuing their legal education at the University of New Mexico. No additional application is required.

Kendall O. Schlenker Scholarship in Law

The Kendall O. Schlenker Scholarship in Law is awarded to an outstanding current or incoming law student at the University of New Mexico who is a New Mexico resident. Nonresident students who obtain New Mexico residency status in their subsequent years of law school attendance are not eligible for this opportunity. This scholarship is named in honor of Kendall O. Schlenker who is a 1957 graduate of the UNM School of Law.

Lee E. Teitelbaum Scholarship

The Lee E. Teitelbaum Scholarship was established in memory of Professor Teitelbaum, who taught at the UNM School of Law from 1973-1986. Professor Teitelbaum focused on juvenile courts, family law, sociology of law, legal history, and professional ethics. The purpose of this fund is to support a new scholarship each year in the amount of $3000 for a New Mexico resident law student that demonstrates financial need. This award can be awarded to the same student each year or to a new student each year.

The Michael Hart Children's Advocacy Fund Scholarship is awarded annually to a New Mexico resident who has demonstrated a strong interest and dedication to pursuing a legal career to benefit and advocate on behalf of children in New Mexico. The awardee must participate in, if and when offered, the New Mexico Trial Lawyers Law Student Association as a stipulation of the award. This scholarship of $20,000 will provide the recipient with funding to cover all tuition costs at the current in-state tuition rate, fees, textbooks, and other related costs for one academic year.

M & A Gross Indian Self Determination Fund for PLSI Graduates Scholarship was established by Michael "Mike" P. Gross, a Santa Fe Attorney and his wife Andrea Gross. This scholarship provides a $3,000 award to two incoming full-time students for three years of law school and a $1,500 bar stipend for the last semester of their 3L year. Candidates for this scholarship must be graduates of the Pre Law Summer Institute (PLSI).

A preference is given to students interested in pursuing practice in the area of Indian Law and students with financial need.

The Peter A. Winograd Endowed Annual Scholarship in Law

The Peter A. Winograd Scholarship in Law was established to honor Peter Winograd's career at the University of New Mexico School of Law and his support of students pursuing a legal education. This scholarship is a merit-based scholarship in the amount of $20,000 per academic year. It will be awarded to an incoming, full-time 1L student who demonstrates a propensity for giving back to his/her community, has made a positive impact on the lives of others, and is a highly qualified and competitive applicant to the law school. The chosen candidate will receive this award for each of his/her three years while attending the UNM School of Law.

This scholarship will be awarded once every three years. The next available award will be for the Fall 2020 incoming 1L class.

Robert C. Poole Memorial Scholarship

The Robert C. Poole Merit Award Endowed Scholarship is awarded annually to an incoming first-year student. The merit-based scholarship is awarded using a number of criteria, including LSAT scores, GPA, and community involvement prior to being admitted to law school. Half of the award is made available to the recipient at the start of the student's first semester of law school. The second half is awarded at the beginning of the student's second semester, provided the student maintains a 3.0 GPA.

The Roehl Advocate Award

The Roehl Advocate award is awarded to a student who exemplifies those attributes of an outstanding trial lawyer. The awardee assists in organizing the intramural competition for selecting the mock trial team and assists the coach of the mock trial team in preparing the team for competition. This award is made to a third-year law student and is awarded during the academic year based on performance.
